Coherent Solutions SwitchPXIe-1003-1 PXIe Optical Switch
The Coherent Solutions SwitchPXIe-1003-1 (Part Number: 786596-01) is an optical switch designed for use in automated fibre test systems. This PXIe 1x4 single-mode device routes an SMF-28 input to four independently selectable outputs, all taking up one PXIe slot, and has a wide operational wavelength band from 1260 nm to 1650 nm. The connector choices are FC/PC, FC/APC, SC/PC and SC/APC and allow for straight plug-in to standard laboratory and production cabling systems, as no connectors or adaptors are needed. The compact chassis and PXIe interfacing make fitting in existing test racks and PXIe instrumentation easy.
This CohSol SwitchPXIe-1003-1 model has specified the optical loss and measurement constants: typical insertion loss for the 1x4 configuration is about 0.8 dB (allow about +0.2 dB / SMF connector), return loss has worked out to about 50 dB with APC+ connectors, the polarization-dependent loss is about 0.1 dB, the wavelength-dependent loss about nil. The crosstalk and repeatability figures are tightly set for sensitive test work, the switch time is about 20 to 25 ms, the optical paths will stand up to +27 dBm power, and the mechanical life is in the millions to hundreds of millions of cycles. These important properties give results which will be consistent over long periods of testing and are such that satisfactory traceable values are obtainable.
Control of the equipment and arrangement of deployment are set out for a PXIe test work-flow: the unit has remote actuation of channels, deterministic selectivity of channels, and driveable position monitoring of channels, and hence software sequences can be used to confirm optical states during automation. Typical fields of application include use for optical transceiver validation, characterization of passive optical components and cabling, routing for telecom links, and high-volume production test work. Here predictable insertion loss, connector choices and fast sequencing will result in reduced setup delays and cycle times. The data sheet also deals with useful details on practical installation, e.g., operating temperature range 5 °C to 45 °C, compact PXIe footprint, weight of the unit of about 1 kg, useful in respect of setting out for laboratory rather than rack deployment.
